Sarah Contrucci Smith is the wonderful founder of Ara Collective. We love her! Why, I hear you ask? Well, firstly she designs a stunning eco-friendly homeware collection. Then there’s the fact that she runs her ethical fashion business with love and integrity. To top it all off, she picked Ethical Stories Ethical Me to be her exclusive supplier in the UK.
Based in Austin, but seeking inspiration and talent from Central America and South East Asia, Ara Collective is a social impact business that partners with highly skilled artisans in Guatemala and Mexico. They enable very talented people in Guatemala and Mexico to keep their pride and heritage, whilst escaping the cruel cycle of poverty.
Sarah uses her background in fashion and business, and her extensive travels, to spot artisans who have the skills that she is looking for. Bringing them on board at Ara Collective, she matches artisans’ creative flair with her own knowledge of the ethical fashion market in the US – be it the latest colour palettes, cushion sizes or interior design trends. Ara Collective champions ethical fashion by empowering women, maintaining fair trade principles and promoting the concept of trade not aid.
So, what does it mean for us as eco-conscious consumers? It means transparency. It means being able to see who made our 100% cotton cushions and throws, and the fair trade arrangement that Sarah has with them. It means we can design our homes beautifully and sustainably. It means as we curl up on our sofas, we can smile when we remember the story our throws and cushions tell.
